Local builders are hoping to smash past records - by collecting more coats than the 6,500 they collected for families in need in 2017.

The Greater Vancouver Homebuilders’ Association is asking the public to drop off lightly used and new coats at locations across Burnaby and throughout the Lower Mainland as part of its Coats for Kids campaign. They are also accepting new toys, which, along with the coats, will go to families in need, distributed via the Christmas Bureaus in the Lower Mainland.

Eight businesses in Burnaby will be drop-off points (see list below) from now until Nov. 30.

Chris Bayless with the Lower Mainland Christmas Bureau said clothing something that is often overlooked.

“People think of toys and food around this time of year, but keeping kids warm is an essential need for every parent too, especially during the colder winter months,” he stated in a press release. “Watching the relief on a parent’s face who finds a size-appropriate coat for their child is a good feeling.”

Coats for teens are always in high demand, and while some teens fit adult sizing, the coats need to appeal their age group, for example, hoodies are a popular with teens.

This is the 23rd year of the Coats for Kids campaign. In total, there are 54 locations in 14 municipalities across the Lower Mainland.
