There are three active COVID-19 outbreaks in Burnaby, according to Fraser Health.
The worst one started on Nov. 13, 2020 at George Derby Centre, a long-term care home in South Burnaby.
George Derby has seen 109 cases, with 84 of those involving residents, according to BC Centre for Disease Control data. Out of those residents, 36 have died.
Ava Turner, executive director at George Derby, told CTV News Vancouver that the centre has done everything possible to stop the spread and that the number of active cases has stabilized.
“I guarantee you the protocols have been followed,” she said.
CTV also quoted provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry as saying this is B.C.’s “most challenging” outbreak as its dragged on since last November.
There is also currently an outbreak at Burnaby Hospital that has seen at least 10 cases.
Fraser Health also declared a COVID-19 outbreak at Burnaby’s biggest child-care centre on Tuesday.
The outbreak was declared at SFU Childcare Society on Burnaby Mountain after 24 COVID-19-positive cases were identified among staff and children.
SFU Childcare Society serves children up to and including five years of age and has one before-and-after school program, said Fraser Health.
“The outbreak is affecting five of the daycare’s classes,” said a Fraser Health news release. “The remainder of classes are unaffected and are able to continue operating. Fraser Health is reviewing infection control measures while the daycare is in operation for classes unaffected by the outbreak.”
