The City of Burnaby has a byelection taking place right now and a new report details how much money the two successful candidates will earn each year.
The provincial government mandates cities release of an annual statement of financial information – known as SOFI. In this statement is a list of what Burnaby Mayor Mike Hurley earns, as well as councillors.
Hurley makes $171,000, along with nearly $33,000 in allowances and benefits. He filed about $2,900 in expenses for 2020.
According to the statement, councillors earn around $78,000 and more than $12,000 in benefits and allowances.
A total of 14 candidates have filed nomination papers for the 2021 Burnaby byelection.
Nomination packages for the upcoming byelection were accepted at the City of Burnaby Election Office from May 11 to May 21 at 4 p.m.

In the City of Burnaby 2021 byelection, voters will elect two city councillors.
The byelections were made necessary after two city councillors – Nick Volkow and Paul McDonell – died within a few weeks of one another in 2020.
Elected councillors will serve on City Council until the next scheduled general local election on Oct. 15, 2022. General Voting Day is June 26, along with advance voting dates on June 12, and June 14 to 19.
