Three taken to hospital after car flips at Burnaby Mountain Park

Police say a driver mistook the gas pedal for the brake while parking and ended up hitting a boulder and flipping the vehicle.

A driver parking at Burnaby Mountain Park ended up flipping their vehicle and attracting a crowd Sunday.

Emergency crews were called to the park shortly before 12:30 p.m. for a single motor vehicle accident, according to the Burnaby RCMP.

"When police arrived they found a vehicle that had flipped from the parking lot onto a grassy area," said an emailed statement from the detachment. "It appears the driver mistook the gas for the brake while parking and hit a boulder, causing the vehicle to flip onto its roof."

Police said the fire department safely extricated the driver and two passengers from the overturned car.

Acting assistant fire Chief Rick Crema told the NOW firefighters had to cut away the passenger-side door.

A video posted on social media shows a large crowd watching the firefighters during the rescue.

All the vehicle's occupants were taken to the hospital but did not appear to have serious injuries, according to police.
