A bronze bust of Mahatma Gandhi was cast in 1969 and donated to SFU by the Indian community in B.C., according the City of Burnaby website.

Burnaby RCMP has set up a dedicated tipline for information about the beheading of a Mahatma Gandhi statue at the Burnaby SFU campus this week.

“We are appealing for assistance from the public as we believe there are people that have information that could help our investigators,” spokesperson Cpl. Mike Kalanj said in a news release. “Anyone with information is asked to call the dedicated phone information line.”

The detachment launched an investigation after getting a call from the university Monday night reporting the head of a bronze bust of Gandhi was missing.

A power tool was likely used to cut off the sculpture’s head, according to the detachment, and the damage appeared to be “a deliberate act of vandalism.”

A dedicated tipline was set up Thursday.

Anyone with information about the damaged statue is asked to contact investigators by calling 604-646-9511.

The statue has been removed, and the university has said SFU Galleries would “assess and determine next steps.”
