The Dow Avenue tower development is on its way for final approval by Burnaby council.

The proposed residential tower would consist of a 33-storey highrise above three storeys of residential townhouses, with a total of 253 units.

After working with the developer to revise the plan for the tower, to address residents' concerns, the rezoning application for the develop-ment went to first and second reading in February.

It went to third reading this week and will go forward for final adoption once all of the city's requirements for the development plan have been met.

The residential tower planned for the site at 6634 and 6638 Dow Ave. in Metrotown upset some people in the area who shared concerns about its proximity to Maywood Community School; traffic congestion; displacement of renters in an apartment building currently on the property; the possibility of increased crime; loss of views and privacy; and the effect on property values.

Neighbourhood residents spoke about these issues at a public hearing last September.

After the rezoning goes into effect, the developer will have six months to demolish the apartment building currently on the site, once all the residents have been relocated, according to Burnaby's building and planning director, Basil Luksun.
