UPDATE: Multiple Burnaby roads closed due to flooding

No word from city on road closures
flooding
When it rains, it pours and when it pours, the city floods.

And, apparently, manhole covers hop and dance too.

Reports are coming in of flooded roads, parks and parking lots in Burnaby and across Metro Vancouver.

The Still Creek area appears to be particularly wet.

The city has announced several road closures in the area.

Brian Carter, the city's manager of public works and operations, said it's typical for that area to flood.

Drivers should respect the road closures even if they think their car can make it through a flooded area, Carter said.

"We just want to protect public safety and precent damaging vehicles," he said.

Earlier this afternoon, a twitter user shared this video of a manhole cover doing a little jig.
Carter said that's not an unusual thing to see during prolonged heavy rain. It happens when storm drains can't handle the heavy flow of water, he said.

"It surcharges and that manhole will basically lift off because the water pressure itself causes that manhole lid to lift off its frame," Carter said.

The system is designed to releave pressur that way, he said. A city crew could bolt down the lid but, Carter said, "You have to be careful what you seal off. It can cause property damage somewhere else."

Meanwhile, the rain has led to some SkyTrain disruptions in New Westmisnter and Surrey.
