B.C.’s police watchdog is in Burnaby today investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting.

The shooting happened around 7 a.m. on Friday when police were called to a home in the 3800 block of Frances Street near Esmond Avenue following reports of shots fired in a home in the area.

Officers from several departments, including Burnaby RCMP, the Lower Mainland Emergency Response Team and Vancouver police, were dispatched to the scene.

Police surrounded the home and determined there was one suspect inside. Officers attempted to reach out to the suspect, but he wouldn’t cooperate, according to a release from the RCMP.

“Due to the possibility that additional individuals’ lives may be at risk, police entered the home,” the release stated.

Shots were fired and the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators with the Independent Investigations Office couldn’t confirm the circumstances of the shooting or whether the suspect shot at police.

A second man was found dead inside the home. He is believed to be the victim of the initial shooting prior to the police arriving. A tenant living upstairs was found uninjured, the release stated.

The RCMP notified the Independent Investigations Office around 8:30 a.m.

Investigators with the Independent Investigations Office are in the preliminary stages of their investigation. They will conduct interviews, collect evidence from the scene, and notify the victim’s next of kin. The victim’s identity likely won’t be released until that time.

No further information on the police shooting is available at this time.

The initial shooting is being investigated by the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team.
