Walmart Canada says the temporary closure of its Burnaby Metrotown location was due to an "act of arson."

In an emailed statement to the NOW, a Walmart Canada spokesperson said emergency services attended a fire at the store during the evening of Tuesday (Jan. 4), while adding associates and customers were safe.

"We are shocked and very disappointed about this act of arson," the statement said.

"We want to thank all first responders who attended the fire."

The company says the first floor of the store will reopen tomorrow morning (Jan.7). The second floor will remain closed as clean-up and repairs are completed.

Walmart's location in Burnaby's Metrotown has been temporarily closed, due to a "recent fire hazard."

A tweet posted this afternoon (Jan. 6) by @metrotowner shows a photo of a sign on the store's front doors saying "the store is temporary closed," while adding the store has been closed for a second straight day.

Another sign from the Walmart pharmacy says "due to the recent fire hazard in the building, your pharmacy at this location will be temporarily closed."

Customers are being advised to visit the pharmacy at Walmart Vancouver #1104 (3585 Grandview Hwy) for the time-being.

The NOW has reached out to Walmart Canada, the store and the Burnaby Fire Department for comment, but has yet to receive a response as of this publication.
