A fire broke out at this Burnaby Brentwood used car dealership Saturday and damaged five vehicles – but things could have ended much worse.

A fire at a Burnaby used car dealership on the weekend was not suspicious, according to police.

A Burnaby Fire Department crew returning to the Hastings fire hall after a medical call spotted the blaze at the Vancouver Car Centre on Douglas Road at around 4 a.m. Saturday before another fire truck could even be dispatched, according to assistant fire Chief Mark Forsberg.

"The junior person on that vehicle notified his officer that he spotted smoke and flame when they were coming along Douglas, and that's what they came upon," Forsberg said.

Firefighters had to force the gate to get at five burning vehicles inside the locked lot, according to Forsberg.

No other trucks were needed to knock down the blaze, and there was no damage to a nearby building, he said.

Firefighters left the scene in the hands of Burnaby RCMP, but police investigators have since determined the fire was not suspicious, according to an RCMP statement Monday.

A man who answered the phone at the Vancouver Car Centre said a GMC pickup, BMW X1 and Hyundai Tucson were among the casualties.

He said the dealership doesn't know what caused the fire and is waiting for ICBC to assess the vehicles before removing them from the lot.

The fire department and Burnaby RCMP were also unable to provide information about what caused the fire.
