A 61-year-old man is in custody - suspected of impaired driving - after a fire hydrant was knocked over and several vehicles were smashed late Friday night, say Burnaby RCMP.
Just before midnight, Burnaby RCMP and firefighters responded to an incident in the area of Royal Oak Avenue and Marine Drive.
Witnesses report a large vehicle was travelling along Marine approaching Royal Oak when it sideswiped a car.
The driver then crashed into a fire hydrant, knocking it completely off. The driver then backed into another car and took off down Marine, knocking over a stop sign and hitting another parked car at Marine and Gilly, where the vehicle got stuck.
Several houses along Marine were flooded by the water gushing from the hydrant. City of Burnaby workers were able to turn off the water while the firefighters helped with pumping out the water from the flooded houses.

“Burnaby RCMP will recommend charges against a 61-year-old man for Refusal to Provide Breath Sample and Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle after a single vehicle stuck a fire hydrant that flooded several Burnaby homes,” RCMP tweeted out.
