Burnaby's Kimberly Newell backstopped British Columbia to its best finish since 2005 at the national under-18 women's hockey championships.

Newell stopped all 40 shots on goal to give B.C. a 5-0 win over Ontario Blue to finish in fifth place in the eight-team competition in Saguenay, Que. on Saturday.

Newell, who plays goal for the Kootenay Ice of the B.C. Major Midget hockey league, was named a second star amongst all players on the Saturday.

B.C. was outshot 40-26 in the final game against Ontario Blue, but Newell was brilliant, especially in the middle period when she turned aside all 20 shots fired her way.

Ontario Red shutout host Quebec 3-0 in the goldmedal final on Sunday. Manitoba took the bronze.

B.C. lost to Ontario Red and Manitoba in Group A play.
