There was gold-a-plenty for Burnaby athletes at last week’s zone track and field championships.
Topping the senior podium on more than one occasion were Burnaby Central Wildcats' Maneesha Dhaliwal, Christina Heslop and Burnaby South Rebels' Katelyn Malmquist, while Isabella Brunoro and Brandon Hsu of Burnaby Mountain, Ryan Goudron of Burnaby Central, the Moscrop Panthers' Holden Clark and Burnaby South’s Lucas Herold achieved the feat in the junior division.
(Burnaby Central and Burnaby Mountain athletes’ results are posted below and also available in separate stories).
Malmquist captured the senior girls 100-metre race with a time of 13.51 seconds, and repeated the honour with the fastest time (27.54) in the 200m. Clark posted the best distance in junior boys long jump, with a leap of 5.92m, and won the triple jump (12.28m). En route to three gold medals, Herold established three new district records with his efforts in the discus (33.10m), shotput (14.45m) and hammerthrow (39.67m).
"As a Grade 9 thrower, (Herold) is competing exceptionally well and will continue to shine at provincials and next year as a Grade 10," remarked Burnaby South coach Talia Zacharias. "(Malmquist) enjoys racing and continues to race well even in the midst of the busy-ness of life."
Also among the champions were Alpha's Henry Ruckman-Utting (1st, jr. boys 3000m), Moscrop's Aaron Fung (1st, jr. boys 1500m racewalk), Burnaby North's Sophia Condilenios (1st, jr. girls 200m) and Andy Zhang (Gr. 8 boys javelin).
Most will head to provincials looking to keep the positive mojo going. The Rebels' Taya Batiste, who missed the zone championships due to injury but swept 100- and 200m dash in the districts, is looking to repeat as last year's B.C. junior girls 100m champ.
The zone, which pits schools from Burnaby, New West and Richmond in a meet of Grade 8, junior and senior divisions, resulted in Burnaby Central claiming another aggregate banner covering the three divisions.
Burnaby Central posted the second-best aggregate score in the senior competition, accumulating 151 combined points between the girls and boys divisions. New West topped the seniors with 176 points.
Burnaby Mountain posted the best aggregate score in the junior division, accumulating a landslide 231 combined points between the girls and boys division. Led by a strong girls squadron, who compiled 146 points, Burnaby Mountain edged city rival Burnaby Central, which tallied 200 points.
At last weekend's multi-sport championships, the Rebels' Youney Terefe finished ninth in the octathon, despite picking up a number of the events for the first time.
