The Burnaby South Rebels marked the end of another school year by unveiling its list of athletic award winners recently.
Leading the parade of recipients were graduating seniors Saeed Habib and Trinity Tuazon, who respectively were awarded the Outstanding Male (Bill Gray Award) and Outstanding Female (Diane Murphy Award) for 2015-16.
Habib was an integral part of the senior boys basketball team and contributed as a member of the Athletic Leadership Council (ALC). A multi-sport athlete, Tuazon played senior girls basketball, volleyball and netball, as well as a member of the ALC.
Picking up the Bill McKercher Award for Male Sportsmanship 12 was Bailey Devito, who was limited from participating in varsity sports due to an injury in his senior year. He competed in both varsity golf and ball hockey, and was a supporter with the ALC.
Jillian Fung dedicated a tonne of hours to the varsity girls volleyball team, while serving as the school’s lead volleyball official and coaching the Grade 8 boys team. It earned Fung the Female Sportsmanship 12 Florence Peterson Award.
William Huang was recognized for his support and contribution to the ALC with the Ernie Fletcher Award, going to someone who contributes through administration/sportsmanship ability in sports.
In Aleks Kalajzdic, Burnaby South had a deserving recipient of the Don Moore Award, for Outstanding Grade 11 Male. He was a key contributor in both varsity soccer and basketball, serving as a quiet lead-by-example player.
A quartet of girls who played both varsity volleyball and basketball shared the Sue Mathie Award, going to the Outstanding Grade 11 Female athlete. Merine Anne Orogo also served as a key member of the school’s swim team, while Graciella Llagas was a leader in ultimate. Calli Glover also ran on the track team, and Larizel Sugue stepped up and coached Grade 8 boys volleyball. Each also contributed as game officials and mentors with the ALC.
For Grade 10s, Alexis Brasnett and Justin Torres received the Outstanding Female and Male athlete awards. Brasnett competed in a full slate of sports – basketball, soccer and volleyball. Torres was a key contributor to the boys’ junior varsity basketball and volleyball teams.
Receiving the Grade 9 Outstanding Male and Female athletes awards were Brandon Obuyes and Stephanie Zaborniak, while Jeric Ducusin and Laini Glover picked up the Outstanding Male and Female Grade 8 athletes honour.
