The St. Thomas More Knights would wrap up the B.C. high school football Eastern conference title with a win over Lord Tweedsmuir on Friday.
The Knights earned a fourth regular season win with a 15-0 victory over Earl Marriot, which has defaulted its final two matchups.
The 4-0 Knights, 25-20 winners over second-place W.J. Mouat in the first week of October, will be taking no chances against Tweedsmuir this Friday night at Burnaby Lake.
"They're a program on the rise and they're big. Four of their linemen are over 300 pounds," said STM head coach Bernie Kully. "But we're in good shape. It's not a big deal. ... We emphasize the process of doing things right on a week-to-week basis."
And STM's top two seniors, Mikey Carney and Kyle Madden, have been nothing short of pleasing to Kully's eye this season.
Carney is averaging a league-high 11.83 yards per game on the ground from his quarterback position during the regular season, while posting 651 yards and five touchdowns through the air, including a league-leading 215 yards a game.
Madden, with 60 tackles, including five quarterback sacks and one interception, is paired with first-year senior Elliot Nelson at linebacker.
Nelson leads the Knights with 450 yards rushing and is second on the squad with 52 tackles on defence.
Another x-factor is special teams, where the reliable 5-5 Justin Siglos has racked up almost 500 yards in return yardage on punts and kickoffs this season.
Another improvement to the team's game has been the physicality of the line play this season, Kully added.
"We're pleased with how things have gone, but this is when things really start counting," he said.
STM faces Tweedsmuir at Burnaby Lake Sports Complex-West on Friday at 7 p.m.
