Burnaby Laker peewee girls placed fifth in the regular season but made it all the way to the finals of the B.C. Lacrosse provincial championships.

The Burnaby Lakers peewee girls’ were all smiles following a silver-medal finish at the B.C. minor lacrosse provincial championships.

The girls were a perfect five-for-five in preliminary round play, before dropping the gold-medal final 5-3 to Ridge Meadows at Port Coquitlam rec centre on Sunday.

Burnaby, which placed fifth following the regular season, defeated the eventual provincial champs 2-1 in an earlier meeting between the two teams on Saturday.

The five-game run at the provincials, included a 3-0 win over the regular season champion New Westminster 2 and a 4-3 victory over fourth-place Coquitlam 2 on a pivotal Day 2 of group play.

“During the regular season, they were all close games,” said Burnaby coach Clayton MacGregor. “I think (the two wins) made them realize they had a really good shot at winning a medal.”

Goalie Trinity Chow, who earned two player-of-the-game honours in the provincials, was also Burnaby’s Fair Play winner.

Emily Kuhn won Burnaby’s peewee all-star award.

Maddie Burkett, Sienna Basi and Kuhn were named individual players of the game in earlier matches.

Elizabeth Chau was a standout on defence for the peewee girls, while three novice call-ups Serena Negrich, Natalie Burkett and Nina Peluso, all played a big part in the team’s overall win, said MacGregor.

Burnaby’s bantam girls’ team was blanked at the provincials   , including a tough 5-4 overtime loss to Nanaimo on opening day.

Brigita Cecic was Burnaby’s all-star award winner.

Sarah Svetic was named Fair Play winner for the bantam girls.

Port Coquitlam 1 shutout New Westminster 6-0 in the bantam girls’ gold-medal final.

The PoCo 2 squad edged Langley 5-4 for the bronze.
