One week after their first Great Northwest Athletic Conference win, the Simon Fraser University Clan fell back to earth with a 34-10 road loss to the Western Oregon Wolves.
The Clan had pulled to within three points at the end of the third quarter, but the Wolves scored three unanswered touchdowns in the final quarter.
The Clan's only touchdown came in the second quarter when Notre Dame grad Tore Corrado hauled in an 80yard touchdown pass to put the Clan up 7-6.
After the Wolves pulled ahead 13-7, Clan quarterback Trey Wheeler led the Clan on a 14-play drive that finished inside the Wolves' five-yard-line before Ian Sternau's field goal got the Clan to within three.
The Clan would lose their bearings in the fourth quarter after Trevor Gates scored for the Wolves and Clan running back Bo Palmer fumbled, leading to a Kenneth Haynes 10-yard touchdown run. Bryve Peila iced the game with a 42-yard interception off Wheeler for the final 34-10 margin.
Wheeler finished 26-for-38 for 286 yards and a touchdown.
Palmer rushed for 43 yards on 16 attempts and Corrado led all SFU receivers with a career high of five catches for 123 yards and a touchdown.
The Clan's next game is this Saturday on the road in Ashland, Oregon against the Southern Oregon Raiders.
In Canadian university football, the UBC Thunderbirds picked off the Regina Rams four times and won 23-16 to clinch a Canada West playoff spot.
Former New Westminster Hyack Vivie Bojilov had two of those picks to help key the T-Birds to their first playoff berth in five seasons.
"That's a load off our shoulders," UBC head coach Shawn Olson said in a press release. "I think that will allow our guys to relax a little bit. I really felt in the first half, especially offensively, we were playing a little scared. To their credit, they came out in the second half and played a little bit better."
