Pre-tournament favourite George Jecminek was true to form at the Burnaby Open tennis championships.
Jecminek plowed through the men’s open field winning all his matches in straight sets before dispatching No. 2 seed Carl Ho, a University of New Mexico grad and current assistant pro at the Richmond Country club, 6-3, 6-2 in the championship final at the Burnaby Tennis Club on Sunday.
Jecminek defeated No. 4 seed and Burnaby Tennis Club product Patrick Walker, who plays tennis with the Simon Fraser University club team, 6-4, 6-2 to advance to the open final.
Juliet Jia Wen Zhang won the open women’s title in three sets.
The No. 1 seed defeated third-seeded Ana Maria Andreea Ileana 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 in the women’s final.
Ileana upset No. 2 seed Angie Walker 6-3, 6-2 to advance to the women’s final.
In the men’s doubles final, top seeds Steve Deakin and Jerry Turek defeated the fourth seeds Evan McNicol and Tejas Phaterpekar 7-5, 4-6, 6-2 in the final.
Michelle Sing and Petra Turek won the women’s open doubles.
The No. 2 seeds got by the unseeded pair of Jessica Albuquerque De Brito and Jenny Fu 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.
De Brito and Fu upset top seeds Alex and Angie Walker 7-6, 7-6 in a closely contested semifinal.
In the men’s wheelchair final, top seed Misha Bilenky dispatched Richard Peter 6-0 and 6-2.
Top-seeded Mark MacConnell lost in the quarter-finals of the men’s 4.5 singles 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 to No. 8 Jonathan Kooy.
No. 9 seed Daniel Dziarmaga defeated Kooy 6-4, 6-3 in the men’s final.
In the 4.5 women’s singles, Fu, the top group seed, beat No. 2 Anastasia Kriv in straight sets 7-5, 6-0 in the final.
Unseeded William Baumann defeated No. 3 seed Michael Curtis 6-4, 6-3 in the 4.0 men’s singles final.
No. 1 seed Ellen Chen beat unseeded Hisami Ikegami 6-1, 1-6, 6-3 in the 4.0 women’s final.
Unseeded players topped both men’s and women’s 3.5 finals.
Paul Nestick knocked off men’s favourite Firas Abdullatif 7-6, 7-6 in a highly competitive championship final.
Helena Sun also took three sets before prevailing over No. 2 seed Karen Tumura 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 in the women’s final.
In the 3.0 finals, Benjamin Zhao and Gloria Sung came out the winners.
Zhao, the seventh seed, defeated unseeded Horia Buzgar 7-6, 6-2, while Sung got by No. 1 Susan Lazaruk 6-2, 7-6.
