WINNIPEG — One man has died and another is in critical condition after police in Winnipeg say it appears the exhaust pipe of the vehicle they were in was blocked by snow.
Police say officers were called Friday after the city's fire and paramedic service responded to a report of a vehicle stuck in a snowbank with two men, aged 84 and 67, unconscious inside.
Both men were taken to hospital, while a dog that was also inside the vehicle was confirmed to have died.
Police say the 84-year-old man later succumbed to his injuries, and the 67-year-old remains in hospital in critical condition.
Police say the deaths are believed to be the result of carbon monoxide poisoning caused by a snow-blocked exhaust pipe, and are not considered suspicious.
Police are reminding the public to take precautions when running vehicles stuck in snow or warming up in confined spaces such as garages.
