The Burnaby-based Greater Vancouver Food Bank has lost its security team.

“One of our learnings through the pandemic is that we require security onsite during food distribution to ensure physical distancing protocols are being followed, and to help deescalate tensions or frustrations during these incredibly stressful times. Our goal is to ensure a peaceful, conflict-free environment for our clients, staff and volunteers,” said food bank CEO David Long.
With the need to find a new Vancouver food distribution site as programming resumes at Mt. Pleasant Community Centre, the GVFB was recently informed that they are losing their Security detail as well, previously provided to them by the City of Vancouver.
The GVFB is hoping that one or more security companies will be able to donate some staff time to their new location in Vancouver.
Recently, Low Tide Properties donated the use of their 20,000-sq-ft. warehouse on Charles St. to the food bank as a temporary location while their new, leased space in Vancouver is being renovated.
“We need a couple of security officers for about 5 hours/day, 4 days/week at the moment,” Long says. “We’re happy to work with a few companies if they are each able to donate a bit of time each week.”
The Vancouver location is the GVFB’s busiest site, serving the largest of the four cities they support (including Burnaby, New Westminster and the North Shore), with 300 – 400 people through their doors each day.
