A hometown favourite returns to Deer Lake

Annual Burnaby Blues and Roots Festival offers up music, the great outdoors and community all in one place

Can you hear it? The rustle of leaves in the breeze, the chatter of happy voices, the strum of a guitar and the tap-taptap on a drum?

If your imagination doesn't work quite well enough to conjure it up, give it a few

days: come Saturday, those will be just a few of the sounds emanating from Deer Lake Park as the annual Blues and Roots Festival welcomes thousands this coming weekend.

This is one of those events that has become synonymous with summer - and, more importantly, with Burnaby. It's a hometown favourite and, as time has passed, it's become a favourite of those far and wide. Indeed, travellers make their way from around the province, from Alberta and even south of the border to take in this event.

This year promises to be another great day of fun in the sun and tunes in the air: with good weather forecast now through the weekend, and a diverse and lively lineup scheduled, ticket-holders are sure to be in for a fantastic event.

If you've never been, this is the year to head down - even if blues and roots isn't your usual fare, there's something about enjoying some good music in the great outdoors in a beautiful setting that makes the world seem a better place.

We're fortunate to have this event right here in our backyard (and Deer Lake, if we may say, is a mighty nice backyard), so let's show some support from the hometown crowd and head down to the festival this Saturday (see page 3 for more details).

Like Christmas, this only happens once a year - so enjoy it while you can.
