Burnaby nature photographer Glen Govier sent me some sad photos this afternoon.
The photos (just click on each photo to scroll through them) document the damage from an early Saturday morning fire that spread quickly through dry grass at Deer Lake Park.
Firefighters were called out just after midnight to the park near Oakmont Crescent, where an estimated quarter of an acre of grass burned up.
Assistant chief Gavin Summers told Global in an interview that the grass was “tinder dry” and that there were reports of residents hearing fireworks.
Govier’s photos clearly show the remnants of fireworks just above where the fire raged.
It’s a damn shame that some idiot(s) decided to be so reckless. Maybe they thought the grass would be wet in March, instead of dry.
Whatever went through their empty heads was bad, but fortunately the fire didn’t reach the nearby homes.
People, please be better than this. Next time, maybe Burnaby firefighters won’t be able to stop the fire so quickly.
