Burnaby’s fried chicken wars just got a little more crowded with the opening of a new restaurant two weeks ago.
We have Church’s Chicken and Hi Five with multiple Burnaby outlets (do we count KFC in this conversation?).
Now we have Korean fried chicken giant Pelicana opening a location in Burnaby, right next door to Red Robin in the small strip mall that sits across from Lougheed Town Centre shopping mall.
If you haven’t heard of Pelicana before, you’re likely not alone because they don’t have any B.C. locations - until now. The nearest one is in Edmonton, Alta.
But it’s a global giant, with more than 3,000 locations since the chain first opened in 1982.
Most are in South Korea, but the company has expanded into the U.S., as well as mainland China and Malaysia, plus a few other countries.
The company touts “Korea’s unique chicken flavours” and the “signature yan-nyum chicken” – a sweet and spicy sauce developed by Pelicana.
Some of the chicken dishes have that traditional fried chicken coating, while others are covered in decadent sauces.
The location makes perfect sense because the corridor along North Road is a hub for Korean restaurants and businesses.
Pelicana's arrival follows the recent opening of a Hi Five 24-hour chicken outlet on Hastings.
Things are getting yummy.
