Dear Editor: This summer, I hiked with my oldest son up the Baden-Powell trail in Deep Cove, and we took in the majestic views of Burrard Inlet. On a different sunny weekend, my younger son gained confidence on his bike along the pathways of New Brighton Park.
Both instances had me looking at the Burrard Inlet for its beauty and for the amount of ship traffic. As summer came to an end and I walked my kindergartener to his first days of school, I couldn't help but notice the oil pipeline markers around his school. Did you know there are 11 school districts whose school properties are near oil pipelines? I can't believe we are letting Prime Minister Harper push forward the pipeline projects on our beautiful coastlines and around our children's schools.
If Prime Minister Harper is in B.C. this week to help pave the way for oil projects, I hope he is meeting with school boards. I hope he is meeting with businesses involved in B.C. tourism. We have too much to lose in terms of our natural coastline, our children and our own healthy way of life. We are not an oil town - that is what I would say to him if I had the chance.
