Dear Editor:
Re: What are your Burnaby MLAs worth, Burnaby NOW, Dec. 6.
This article took me to an all-new level of amazement and obfuscation.
The article publicizes all incomes, assets and liabilities of several MLAs.
I was of the understanding that we elect politicians for the purpose of acting on behalf of the welfare of their constituents. We, the public, elect these politicians and give them the mandate to carry on with our political affairs.
Therefore, it is our duty to question their ability and loyalty towards that job.
Since we employ these people, then yes, we also have the right to ask if they get paid fairly, if they get paid too much, if they give themselves too many and too high of increases, if they spend too much, etc.
However, with that said, questioning/publicizing how many houses they own, how many RRSPs they have, and what other incomes/liabilities they have, I find it to be the most futile and intrusive act on our part.
In my opinion, we need to redirect our priorities.
