Information is enlightening

DEAR EDITOR:

A "thank you" is owed to the staff of Burnaby Hospital and Fraser Health Authority.

The Burnaby Hospital is a public institution, and under B.C.'s Freedom of Information legislation the hospital is the custodian of records, which everyone can access with limited exceptions (e.g., patient information isn't accessible to the public so as to protect people's privacy).

Recently, I benefited from B.C.'s freedom of information legislation when the Burnaby Hospital and Fraser Health Authority emailed me administrative documents. The documents unbridled me from an assumption about Burnaby and the Burnaby Hospital that had been misleading me for a long time.

If readers would also like to enjoy the benefits of B.C.'s freedom of information legislation and be provided with documents that are in the custody of the Burnaby Hospital, then email Alexis.Kerr@ fraserhealth.ca with a description of the documents you'd like.

And while the people of B.C., through our elected representatives in the legislative assembly, are owed the biggest "thank you" for having granted everyone permission to access the documents, a "thank you" is still owed to the people at Burnaby Hospital and the Fraser Health Authority for a job well done.

Mark Weiler, Burnaby
