Re: Bag bans at Burnaby Walmart and Safeway a ‘middle finger’ to shoppers, NOW Letters

I read the letter to the editor in the NOW about the ban on plastic shopping bags at the Burnaby Walmart stores and all Safeways.

I appreciate that the change felt sudden to some people, especially seniors who hadn’t seen the signage put up by the stores. Perhaps the stores could have been more proactive.

But the larger issue remains that getting rid of plastic bags is an idea that all shoppers need to get used to because more businesses will be doing this in the future. As well, more and more cities are banning single-use plastics.

It’s just better for the environment. Shoppers need to invest in reusable bags and just get into the habit of bringing them everywhere when they are getting their groceries or even if they are just out and about and decided to stop in for a few items.

It just takes time to get used to bringing your own bags. I’m glad that some stores are not just making this optional. It’s a good corporate policy to do what they can to get customers into better habits.

We need to get rid of these bags so please quit your crying and get with the program.
