Letters: Leave those parking spaces alone

Burnaby council questioned the amount of parking in a planned development. But not everyone can get around the region by transit, readers note.

Skimping on parking spaces for tower residents puts many people at a great disadvantage, readers say.

Re: ‘Ridiculous’: 14 levels of underground parking in proposed 80-storey Burnaby tower draw concerns

Editor: If the developer wants to pay for the building of more parking spots, councillors like Alison Gu should mind their own business and keep their personal views out of it. People like to visit owners in condos and it is nice when they have a place to park. Yes, SkyTrain is close by, but if people choose to drive their own vehicles, that’s their choice.

Editor: No mention how many of those over 2,600 parking spots would have access to EV chargers. Even if just 30 per cent of those stalls had chargers, the amount of extra electrical power the building would require would be huge! Funny how there’s this big push to switch to electric cars, but hardly anyone addressing the issue of lack of charging stations, whether private or public and also our electric grid capacity limits. The disconnect is truly astonishing. Maybe bylaws around EV charging requirements in New projects is also something Burnaby and other cities needs to be addressing, and urgently.

Editor: These folks making policies are out of touch totally ― of course you need a car. A family of four is expected to do their grocery shopping and bring it all back on the SkyTrai? Or on a bike? Get real. The car won’t be gas power, but it will still be needed. I think the mayor and council should go without a car for a year. Ha ha ha, they wouldn’t last a month without a car. These people set rules for everyone else but always exempt themselves. That’s why politicians can’t get no respect!

Editor: Is the mayor nuts? There is and will be lack of parking, free parking, in all Greater Vancouver as more highrises go up everywhere. Why reduce parking spots under a tower? Nuts!

Tim Jacobs

Editor: It is all very fine for our city council to talk about how close new highrise buildings are to SkyTrain. SkyTrain is convenient if you want to go from Burnaby to Vancouver, Surrey or Coquitlam, but if you want to go north/south in Burnaby, it is relatively useless. I live about a mile from two SkyTrain stations, but I am at least half a mile from the nearest bus stop. Going to Metrotown would require a transfer. As a senior, am I likely to give up my car and rely on transit? Not likely. If I am no longer driving, I am probably looking at having to move.
