NEB announces new intervenors for Burnaby Mountain route

The NEB posted the list of accepted intervenors for the Burnaby Mountain portion of the route for the Kinder Morgan pipeline expansion.

The NEB posted the list of accepted intervenors for the Burnaby Mountain portion of the route for the Kinder Morgan pipeline expansion.

There were 46 applicants, four were granted intervenors status:

  1. Marco Aurillo, a New West resident and geologist who mostly works in the mining industry but has expertise on slope stability and building tunnels.
  2. Simon Fraser University, chief safety officer, Terry Waterhouse, who oversees emergency planning and risk management.
  3. SFU Student Society
  4. The Graduate Student Society at SFU.

Six people who requested commenter status got commenter status. Commenter status means you can submit a letter to the hearing, expressing your views.

23 requested intervenor status but were granted commenter instead.

13 were denied, and that includes five people who were already accepted as commenters (from the first round of applications for the overall hearing) but were hoping to upgrade their status to intervenor. The other eight were rejected because they were raising issues not related to the hearing according to the NEB's mandate. That means they wanted to talk about climate change, sustainable energy alternatives, oil sands development etc.

SFU seems an obvious choice, since the Burnaby Mountain route goes close to the campus.
