As I’ve seen over the years in following transit decisions in Metro Vancouver, it’s usually the loudest voices that get the goodies.
That’s why Burnaby residents who want new rapid transit in their community – or who think it’s a terrible idea – need to start yelling now.
The Transport 2050 plan is now out for public consultations after being released earlier this week. These consultations are needed so individual projects can be prioritized and the region can begin the search for funding.
A bus rapid transit connection linking Metrotown in Burnaby to Park Royal in West Vancouver is listed for “immediate” planning and design work, with implementation expected in the second half of the 10-year plan once the exact routes and technology have been settled.
This line would run east and west along Hastings and then north and south along Willingdon Avenue, running past the Amazing Brentwood.
The plan also lists a gondola up Burnaby Mountain as a priority.
TransLink CEO Kevin Quinn said the intent of the plan is to address the climate, affordability, and congestion crises that weigh on the region.
“The plan we're releasing today will invest in convenient, reliable, safe and comfortable transit. It will build out the reliable and fast transit network including new rapid transit and express inter-regional connections. And it will support people-first streets and walking, biking and rolling,” said Quinn.
Other projects are listed in the plan but these are the two biggest for Burnaby. Like I said, if you like or oppose these, you need to get your voice heard. I personally support the rapid transit that would go along Hastings and Willingdon. We need more rapid transit to get people out of their vehicles.
Public consultations on the priorities are open until May 4. A survey can be filled out via TransLink's website.
