Poll: How much should you tip food delivery drivers from services like Skip the Dishes or Uber Eats?

Skip the Dishes, Uber Eats and other food delivery people are a common sight on city streets.

Tipping is an unclear practice.

It's something that's expected in some places and unheard of in others. While debit and credit machines appear to have made asking for tips more common in some places and inflated tip expectations in others, it's not always easy to figure out what the expected amount is or if it's fair.

Food delivery has been around for decades, but with food delivery apps, it's evolved, and for many it's unclear what the new normal is, given that the main opportunity to tip usually comes before the service has been completed.

So V.I.A. asked readers what the usual amount is.

And it seems for many that amount is zero.

Almost 40 per cent of locals (and more than 40 per cent of all readers) don't tip their Skip the Dishes or Uber Eats drivers at all.

Those who do tip tend not to tip the drivers as much as in-house wait staff, where 15 per cent or more is usual.

For drivers, a tip of under 14 per cent is more likely than 15 per cent or higher, and under 10 per cent is the most likely amount of the six options in the poll.

About 20 per cent of respondents tip between 15 per cent and 20 per cent, in line with tip amounts at restaurants with table service.

Around three percent of respondents claim to tip more than 25 per cent.
