Statement from Marathassa, the ship behind the oil leak in Vancouver.

Marathassa is confirmed as the ship behind the Vancouver oil spill.

Marathassa is confirmed as the ship behind the Vancouver oil spill. In yesterday's press conference, authorities suspected Marathassa, but couldn't confirm and said the ship was denying it was the source, so I asked the Marathassa spokesperong to clarify. Here's what he said:

Jennifer,

Yes the source was the Marathassa. We worked closely with the authorities and technical experts to discover the source of the leak, and we moved rapidly with the authorities and professional responders to boom the vessel and address the sheen while the investigation was ongoing.

I hope there is no confusion, we participated with all involved and until we knew for certain it was our ship, could not say definitively it was the Marathassa.  But we never hesitated to search out the cause and respond.

Sincerely,
Jim Lawrence

If you're ever interested in seeing what ships are in the Burrard Inlet, check this handy map. Just zoom in on Vancouver. The red icons are oil tankers. Most are cargo ships or bulk carriers, like Marathassa. At the time of this posting, you can see the WCMRC ship (part of the cleanup crew) close to the Marathassa. Also, click on the Marathassa for the ship's profile.
