Dear Editor:

Re: Let's try a new approach, Letters to the editor, Burnaby NOW, March 9.

It appears as if Garth Evans does not read the actual reports of the Burnaby NOW, as it was clearly reported by Jennifer Moreau on 2 March (i.e. "Burnaby students stage walkout in support of teachers") that the students who are paying attention support the striking teachers. They do not do this because they want to break the law, as he suggests - easily discoverable for anybody that bothers to read.

Those who live in the real world understand that the Liberals were the ones who initially broke the law in 2002, when they tore up the teachers' collective agreement. Of course, that's understandably an inconvenient fact that has been consigned to the memory hole.

As for his economic platitude, if it were true that the Liberal party cared about the "dire state of the province's finances," it would not be privatizing liquor distribution, which brings in substantial revenue. Clearly, the "net-zero mandate" is just a euphemism for "what we say goes."

Anyone who can make their way out of a paper bag will recognize that teachers have the right to resist a dictatorship, just as every other worker should - regardless of whether they succeed or not.
