Who's going to benefit?

Dear Editor:

Re: Job losses are a real concern, Letters to the editor, Burnaby NOW, Jan. 13.

My applause goes to Gwenne Farrell, vice-president of COPE local 378, for her accurate response to David Field's letter to the editor in regards to the installation of smart meters.

In her letter, she invites David Field for some face-to-face research with the local union and also to attend a meeting with the meter reading employees who could, potentially, lose their jobs.

I would like, and I'm sure many others would too, a followup letter by Gwenne Farrell to let us know if indeed he accepted the above invitations.

Also, Mr. Field, allegedly, is of the opinion that by eliminating meter reading positions through normal attrition, it would save taxpayers millions of dollars.

I personally fail to see how that would save us, the taxpayers, money. The only way I could see that happening is if our hydro fees would decrease, and that, I believe, will only be the case in our dreams.

However, I do agree that through the elimination of jobs, whether done by normal attrition or otherwise, B.C. Hydro will eventually save money , but in my humble opinion, the only ones who will benefit from that will be B.C. Hydro's top-rank employees, by increasing their bonuses, and B.C. Hydro itself - not the taxpayers.
