FREDERICTON — Jenica Atwin, member of Parliament for Fredericton, is joining the exodus from the federal Liberals.
A spokeswoman for the MP said today she won't run for re-election.
Atwin was first elected in 2019 as a Green Party member before crossing the aisle to join the Liberals in 2021.
She was appointed parliamentary secretary to the minister of Indigenous services in 2023.
More than two dozen Liberals, including former housing minister Sean Fraser, former revenue minister Marie-Claude Bibeau, and former sport minister Carla Qualtrough, are taking themselves out of the running for the next campaign.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has also said he won't run in the next election, promising to step down as Liberal leader after his successor is elected on March 9.
Canada's fixed-date election law sets the next general election for October 2025, but it could come earlier.
Katherine McAllister, a spokeswoman for Atwin, says the MP "made the decision that it is in the best interest of her family that she take a step back from federal politics for the time being."
