MONTREAL — Montreal Canadiens defenceman Kaiden Guhle will travel with the team on its upcoming road trip after undergoing surgery on a lacerated quadriceps muscle in January.

Guhle skated in a regular jersey Monday at CN Sports Complex in Brossard, Que., for the first time since sustaining the injury on Jan. 28 against the Winnipeg Jets.

The 23-year-old from Edmonton had four goals and 10 assists in 44 games before the injury while playing a key shutdown role for Montreal.

The Canadiens never provided a timeline for his return. At the March 7 trade deadline, general manager Kent Hughes said the team would not rush Guhle back into the lineup if it fell out of the playoff race.

Montreal, however, held the Eastern Conference's second wild-card spot with 75 points, one more than the New York Rangers with two games in hand, before Monday's NHL action.

The Canadiens begin their four-game road trip Tuesday against the St. Louis Blues before making stops in Philadelphia, Carolina and Florida. Head coach Martin St. Louis confirmed goalie Sam Montembeault would start his fifth consecutive game against the Blues.
