Burnaby opens cooling centres in hot weather

City-run cooling centres are open now and will close as of Aug. 18.

There are now four cooling centres open in Burnaby to get a reprieve from the heat.

Burnaby has opened its two cooling centres in response to the hot weather.

The cooling centres operate from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and will close Friday, Aug. 18 as temperatures begin to cool.

The cooling centres are at:

  • Cameron Recreation Complex (9523 Cameron St.)
  • Eileen Dailly Leisure Pool and Fitness Centre (240 Willingdon Ave.)
  • Bonsor Recreation Complex (6550 Bonsor Ave.)
  • Edmonds Community Centre (7433 Edmonds St.)

Each centre has air conditioning, seating, drinking water, washrooms and free Wi-Fi.

The Society to End Homelessness in Burnaby also opened its two cooling centres on Sunday, open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at:

  • Civic Square (Central Boulevard and McKay Avenue, outside Bob Prittie Metrotown Library)
  • Kensington Park (corner of Frances Street and Fell Avenue) 

The pop-up cooling centres have washrooms, drinking water, seating and free Wi-Fi.

The city also notes several public parks have push-button spray parks and wading pools, as well as other cooling resources.
