Musical theatre fans, here’s one you won’t want to miss.
Burnaby South Secondary is presenting Chicago: High School Edition onstage at the Michael J. Fox Theatre next week. It’s on Tuesday, March 5 and Wednesday, March 6 at 7 p.m., plus a 1 p.m. matinee on Wednesday.
The award-winning Kander and Ebb musical holds the record as the longest-running musical revival and the longest-running American musical in Broadway history, and it was popularized again in recent times by the Academy Award-winning film in 2002. Set in Roaring ’20s Chicago, it follows the story of chorus girl Roxie Hart, who murders her lover and convinces her naïve husband, Amos, to take the fall – until he finds out he’s been duped.
“Roxie joins other murderesses locked up in the Cook County jail, including vaudeville’s hottest jazz slayer, Velma Kelly. The two quickly become rivals, as both vie for the spotlight, headlines and assistance of the slickest lawyer, Billy Flynn,” says a show synopsis.

The performers will be accompanied by a live orchestra of Burnaby South music students, and the show also features the school’s jazz dance company.
