Mark your calendars for Saturday, Aug. 4 - it's time for the annual Kensington community fair. According to organizers, the fair has grown to the second largest community event in Burnaby over the past 12 years. This year's theme is "think globally, act locally."
"We're trying to get people to shop close to home, save the environment and cut back on gas," said organizer Ken Ryan from the Burnaby North Community Association, a group for businesses, schools, the faith community and residents of the Kensington area. The fair features information tables for non-profit groups and politicians. There are also midway rides. For $5, kids can get a wrist band to go on rides and on a bouncy castle all day. There will also be entertainment, burgers and beverages. Admission is free. Ryan is expecting 5,000 people if the weather is good.
"We're trying to show the community what's available close to home. Quite a few of the local business have a booth there," Ryan said, adding there will be balloons, face painting and a visit from firefighters, who are bringing their truck for the kids.
The fair is in Kensington Park, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. If you are driving from Hastings Street, turn south on Holdom Avenue and then east on Curtis Street.
