Burnaby residents will be among those taking to the stage when Vancouver Opera presents Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore later this month.

The opera (known in English as The Elixir of Love) features a lovestruck man, a village beauty, an army captain and a travelling doctor with a magic potion – all set in this incarnation in an early 1900s Canadian town. The opera, one of the most well-known of the bel canto era and the most performed of all Donizetti’s operas, hasn’t been seen in Vancouver since 1999.

When it takes to the stage at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre Jan. 21 to 27, it will star soprano Ying Fang, tenor Andrew Haji, bass-baritone Stephen Hegedus and baritone Brett Polegato.

Burnaby’s Heather Molloy will be in the opera chorus, while two Burnaby musicians are also part of the orchestra – trumpet player Jim Littleford and acting concertmaster Angela Cavadas.
