Alcohol suspected in Burnaby crash that wiped out traffic light

Two drivers walked away from a collision between a pickup and an SUV at Kingsway and Royal Oak Avenue early Thursday morning.

Alcohol is believed to have been a factor in a two-vehicle crash that took out a traffic light pole and snarled traffic in Burnaby Thursday morning, according to police.

Burnaby RCMP was called to the area of Kingsway and Royal Oak Avenue just after 5 a.m. for reports of a crash, according to spokesperson Cpl. Mike Kalanj.

At the scene, officers found a badly damaged pickup truck and SUV that had come to rest on the sidewalk and grassy area in front of the old bank building on the southeast corner of the intersection.

Photos of the scene show a detached traffic light standard lying on the pickup.

Kalanj said it appears the truck was travelling southbound on Royal Oak when it was struck by the SUV heading eastbound on Kingsway.

The airbags deployed in the crash, but the two drivers, the only occupants of the vehicles, did not need to be taken to hospital, according to Kalanj.
