Burnaby battered by major Metro Vancouver snowfall

But, schools are open.

Burnaby residents are digging out after the city was hit hard by a major Metro Vancouver snowfall.

Burnaby is one of the numerous municipalities digging out after a major snowfall hit Metro Vancouver on Tuesday night (Nov. 29).

Last night turned into a snarl of traffic throughout the Lower Mainland, with drivers getting stuck on hills and bridges shutting down. At points throughout the evening and late into the night, Google maps was nearly entirely "red" — meaning traffic was going nowhere, or almost nowhere.

In Burnaby, it was particularly challenging going up the steep hill along Royal Oak southbound at Deer Lake parkway, with police closing the road due to vehicle stalls.

Environment Canada has ended its snowfall warning for Metro Vancouver, but drivers are cautioned to continue to take care on the roads this morning.

More snow is in the forecast for later this week, with scattered flurries expected on Friday — but nothing like yesterday's storm.

Burnaby schools open on Wednesday

Kids hoping for a snow day were disappointed on Wednesday morning with School District 41 announcing all schools in the district were open.

They added the decision to send your child to school or not is ultimately "a family one," asking parents to notify schools if their children would be absent.

Simon Fraser University's Burnaby campus announced it would be closed until 10:30 on Wednesday morning due to campus road conditions.

Burnaby RCMP remind drivers to clear cars before driving

Burnaby RCMP has reminded drivers to clear all of their vehicle before driving, not just small sections.

"With snow falling, Burnaby RCMP would like to remind drivers to clear their vehicle of snow," a Twitter post read.

"We often see drivers not clearing their vehicle completely, including the roof and all windows.

"We will be out doing enforcement during the snowfall in an effort to make our roads safer. Please clear your vehicle of snow and ice and ensure you have appropriate tires. In some cases tickets may be issued when drivers are causing hazards for themselves or others."

Taking transit: Prepare for delays throughout Metro Vancouver

TransLink renewed its winter weather alert at 5:27 a.m. this morning, noting snowy conditions may still cause delays throughout the bus and SkyTrain system.

A TransLink news release warned of bus delays in New Westminster, Surrey, South Vancouver and Richmond, in particular.

You can search for your transit route of choice at the TransLink alerts site.

"We continue to salt and sand bus loops and SkyTrain stations, but please use caution in these areas; there may be extra crowding on some bus routes and SkyTrain platforms today," TransLink said in a public alert.

Transit riders are encouraged to dress for the elements and use proper footwear to avoid slips and falls.
