Inside the packages will be all the ingredients for a vegetarian pasta meal – complete with cooking instructions.

“Understanding that our communities are very diverse, we wanted to create an initiative that is inclusive to all families,” local firefighters union vice-president Scott Alleyn told the NOW.

When in-class instruction isn’t suspended because of a once-in-a-100-year pandemic, the firefighters run a nutritional snack program at local community schools.

Through those connections, firefighters found out which families might be struggling through the pandemic, Alleyn said.

“Our firefighters are committed to assisting Burnaby's families,” he said. “The past few months have been challenging for many people, and we wanted to develop an initiative that would directly support our community and bring families together with a home-cooked meal.”

To keep things topical, the food hampers also include fire-safety information.
