Burnaby has logged its worst week ever for COVID-19 cases.
The latest data from the BC Centre for Disease Control show that from Dec. 6-12, Burnaby had 341 cases.
That’s up significantly from the previous period of Nov. 29-Dec. 5, when Burnaby had 238 cases, which is the exact same number Burnaby had for the entire month of September, according to the BCCDC.
Part of the reason for cases escalating recently has been an outbreak at Burnaby Hospital that saw more than 100 cases and multiple deaths. Many schools have also seen repeated COVID-19 exposures, including several at the city’s biggest high school, Burnaby North.
One Burnaby care home has also seen a massive outbreak. AgeCare Harmony Court at 7197 Canada Way in Burnaby emailed families on Wednesday with the latest numbers, with 121 total cases and 13 deaths – many of those cases occurred during the Dec. 6-12 period.
Harmony Court’s independent living section has had 20 residents test positive for COVID-19 to date. Four of these residents are currently in the hospital, says the update, which has been shared with the NOW. Three staff have also tested positive for COVID-19 to date.
Harmony’s Court’s care centre has had 70 residents testing positive for COVID-19 to date, with two of these residents currently in hospital and 28 staff members testing positive - 7 of these staff members are cleared to return to work, says the email.
New cases of COVID-19 skyrocketed in Burnaby in November with 1,081.
That’s a huge jump from the 287 cases Burnaby had in all of October and 238 cases in September.
According to the BCCDC, Burnaby has now seen 1,938 COVID-19 cases between Jan. 1 and Nov. 30, 2020.
