Burnaby Mounties say an 85-year old man is devastated over the theft of a bike he rode across Canada in the mid-1980s.

Cpl. Rick Skolrood, a spokesman for the RCMP, said the man kept the 10-speed Apollo bicycle mounted on the wall in his garage to remind him of his trip.

In 1981, the man, then 53, attempted to cross Canada on his bike but fell ill in Regina and had to abandon his attempt.

He was determined to succeed and in 1985, at the age of 55, he set off again on the same bike with two red saddlebags, said Skolrood. He succeeded and along the way stopped in Ontario to surprise his daughter.

"Every time he entered his garage and looked at his bicycle proudly mounted on his wall and lovingly kept in pristine condition, he would recall the trip in vivid detail," said Skolrood, in a statement.

On June 8, a thief broke into his detached garage in the area of Canada Way and Goodlad Street.

Later, a New Westminster police officer spotted a similar looking bicycle and attempted to apprehend the rider who was suspected of similar break and enters, but the suspect got away.
