Burnaby civic politicians will lead two of Metro Vancouver's standing committees in 2024.

Mayor Mike Hurley will chair the liquid waste roundtable with the regional district, while Coun. Sav Dhaliwal, of the Burnaby Citizens Association (BCA), will head the Indigenous Relations team.

Hurley will also be part of all three Metro task forces next year - financial planning, George Massey crossing and the North Shore Wastewater Treatment Plant program - in addition to the finance and regional planning committees.

Six other Burnaby councillors are set to provide a voice on seven other Metro committees (in alphabetical order):

  • Coun. Pietro Calendino = Regional parks and Zero waste
  • Coun. Alison Gu = Climate action
  • Coun. Joe Keithley = Water
  • Coun. Richard Lee = Invest Vancouver Management Board
  • Coun. Maita Santiago - Regional culture
  • Coun. Daniel Tetrault = Housing

The appointments were announced last Wednesday, Dec. 20, in a statement from Metro Vancouver.

There are 15 standing committees — each one governs the often unseen yet vital aspects of regional infrastructure.

Metro Vancouver is made up of 21 municipalities from Lions Bay to Langley Township, an electoral area and Tsawwassen First Nation, and plans for regional services such as waste, drinking water, urban growth and affordable housing.
