Two Burnaby men are among the first confirmed to be facing charges related to the Stanley Cup riot.
The Vancouver Police Department released the names of the first 25 suspected rioters for whom Crown counsel has approved charges on Wednesday. Among them, 21-year-old Alexander Pennington and 30-year-old Timothy Kwong of Burnaby.
Pennington has been charged with one count of break-and-enter and one count of participating in a riot. Kwong is facing one count of arson and one count of participating in a riot.
Crown counsel has now approved 61 charges against 25 men and women ranging in age from 18 to 33. Nine of the accused are from Surrey, eight from Vancouver, two are from Maple Ridge, while Delta, North Vancouver, Seattle and Richmond each have one facing charges.
Charges for rest of the 25 include assault and mischief.
"We are very encouraged by the approval of these 61 charges and we will continue to work closely with the special prosecution team as even more charges are expected in the coming days and weeks," said Insp. Les Yeo in a press release.
On Oct. 31, Vancouver police recommended 163 charges against 60 individuals, including nine from Burnaby.
"We are now another step closer to holding suspected rioters accountable for their actions on June 15th," Yeo added.
