A City of Burnaby project to add covered “sports boxes” at two local parks has been scaled back to add just one of them due to the cost.

A report presented to the financial management committee on Tuesday says the covered sports areas were to be located at Riverway Sports Complex and Confederation Park.

“Preliminary design of the covered sports boxes has concluded with options endorsed by the Parks, Recreation and Culture Commission,” said the report. “Quantity surveys completed for the project have indicated a cost estimate of $6,500,000 for the core program … The Covered Sports Boxes project is included in the 2022 – 2026 Financial Plan for $4,500,000.”

Based on the cost estimate, “there is insufficient funding available in the plan,” the report says, to undertake both locations and staff are proceeding with the Confederation Park project in 2022.

The covered sports box for the Riverway Sports Complex location will be undertaken as a next phase, the report says.

“As the estimated cost exceeds the approved plan by $2,000,000, funding will need to be re-allocated from another project. As part of the upcoming contract award, staff will identify which projects have been deferred to accommodate the Covered Sports Box project.”
