A 22-year-old man is in Burnaby RCMP custody after police responded to an incident in Metrotown Tuesday morning (Aug. 22).

Burnaby RCMP has released information about a large police response at a Metrotown apartment building early Tuesday morning (Aug. 22).

Police got a call around 4:50 a.m. about a "woman in distress," according to an emailed Burnaby RCMP statement.

Despite limited information, investigators were able to determine the woman was inside an apartment at a high-rise on the corner of Grange Street and Halley Avenue

"There were concerns of imminent danger to the woman due to reports of weapons being involved, so the Emergency Response Team (ERT) was called to assist," the statement said.

Police entered the suite at about 10 a.m. and arrested a 22-year-old Burnaby man.

A woman was located safe and uninjured inside the apartment.

The suspect and victim are known to each other, and there is no ongoing risk to the public, according to police.

On Wednesday (Aug. 23), Yashar Pour Lefteh was charged with unlawful confinement and uttering threats.

He remains in custody.

Neighbours took to social media Tuesday to comment on the incident, describing a "massive presence" including police, firefighters, and tactical officers at the Burnaby Centre apartments.

"There were guns drawn," stated one post on Reddit.
