Burnaby RCMP is stepping up traffic enforcements in school zones around the city this week.

Burnaby RCMP is looking to nip dangerous driving in school zones in the bud this week.

With kids heading back to school, police will be setting up extra traffic enforcement in school zones across the city, according to a news release Tuesday.

"While school zones are designed to enhance safety, officers routinely see drivers and parents in a rush, completely ignoring traffic laws meant to protect road users, including students," Burnaby RCMP Sgt. Thane Royce said in the release. "Being late or in a hurry is not an excuse to drive dangerously."

School zones in Burnaby are in effect from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. on school days, and going more than 30 kilometres per hour by a school could earn you a $196 to $253 ticket.

Burnaby RCMP is also urging cyclists and pedestrians to be aware and remain vigilant when near roadways, including crossing at marked crosswalks and not mid-block.

Other safety tips for drivers and pedestrians can be found on the RCMP website.

"Heading back to school is an exciting time for families," Royce said. "Give yourself time to get where you're going safely. Using common sense and sticking to the rules of the road can help ensure a safe school year ahead for everyone, including kids."

The top 5 dangerous behaviours officers will be looking out for this week include:

  • Speeding
  • U-turns
  • Distracted driving
  • Disobeying stop signs
  • Stopping in no stopping and no parking zones
